Rose's Angel: Chapter 2

Rated PG-13
© 1999 Holly @ Roseslay@aol.com
based on some characters
and situations originated by James Cameron

The sun rose over the Atlantic Ocean in bright shades of pink and lavender. The clouds seemed to frame the sun almost as if Monet himself had painted the scene. It was a glorious sunrise, as if the heavens opened up to pay tribute to the fifteen hundred souls who had perished the night before.

The glare of the harsh sun woke Rose. It stirred Jack also. It seemed that what he had lost with his physical presence, he had gained in a new spiritual ability. He had the gift of seeing into Rose's soul and living in her heart. He was able to see, hear, and feel everything she was experiencing. She was so cold, but that didn't bother him as much as the incredible sense of loneliness and despair she was feeling. He would have given anything to be able to hold her and reassure her that everything would be okay. God, please, he thought, if I can't hold her, please let me help her somehow. Jack felt that feeling her pain was worse than the icy waters of the North Atlantic the night before.

Rose looked at the sunrise and thought that it was dreadful that the sun continued to rise without her dear Jack. How could she go on? She had promised, but she had no idea how to fulfill that promise.

Jack heard her thoughts. "To the stars," she was thinking. My God, Jack thought, it was only last night that he made love to her. Their souls joined and their thoughts came together at the exact same moment. "Put your hands on me, Jack," and he truly wished he could.

Rose felt Jack -- he was there. She looked all around and all she could see was boats filled with people, mourning the loss of their loved ones. But no Jack. She knew he was there, but where was he? "I am here in your heart," she heard him say, but not in words -- she heard it in her soul.

Jack felt someone come up behind him. He slowly turned his head to see Thomas Andrews looking at him.

"It was a special gift you gave young Rose," Thomas said to him.

"It's called true love," answered Jack.

"More precious than anything else on earth. Cal will never realize that."

Jack nodded his head in agreement and smiled sadly. Thomas knew he was hurting and put his hand gently on Jack's shoulder to offer him some comfort. Jack continued looking at Rose.

The shock was wearing off. Rose was remembering everything that had happened to her the past few days. What am I going to do? Where am I going to go? she asked herself.

"Jack, help me," she said out loud, "I don't know how to live without you."

A gentle breeze blew through Rose's hair. In her soul she heard Jack say, "Everything is going to be all right now. I love you and I am with you always." Rose felt a warmth go through her entire body. She was no longer cold. For the moment, she felt peaceful. Jack was with her -- she felt him near. Everything was going to be all right because Jack had promised it would be, and he had never broken a promise to her, just as she would never break her promise to him. She slowly drifted back into a peaceful sleep. The last thing she saw as she closed her eyes was theCarpathia coming over the horizon.

Jack felt somewhat relieved that he had comforted her. For the time being, she was going to need him a lot. Jack was wise enough to know that there would come a time when he would have to step back. Eventually someone else would fill the void in her heart, not to take his place, but to fill an emptiness that he could not. He had accepted that fact when he had made her promise to survive last night.

Thomas Andrews smiled at him and said, "Jack, you are the kindest and most honorable gentlemen I have ever met."
