Rose Down Under: Chapter 12

based on some characters
and situations originated by James Cameron

Ben stared down at Rose's fragile form as she lay in the hospital bed. Her face was as white as a sheet and she was continually shivering, although the heat of the day was still thick in the air. Ben had immediately brought Rose to the small hospital in town, consisting of only a few beds. Ben reached towards Rose and wiped a lock of hair from her delicate face.

Suddenly, Rose's eyes flicked open and she looked quickly around the foreign room. Ben looked at her as she drew rapid shallow breaths. Her eyes continued to dart curiously around the room. Rose struggled to say something, her mouth opening but not being able to form the words.

Finally, one word seemed to become audible. "Jack.." she whispered, with pain in her voice. "Jack..." she began to say worriedly, as she realized he was not beside her in the middle of the pacific ocean anymore. "Jack... Jack..."

Ben looked at her strangely. "Rose, it's me Ben. Are you ok?"

Rose stared at him strangely. "Who are you? I don't..." Rose struggled with the words."....Jack?"

A single nurse wandered into the room. "I see she is awake now. That is good." The nurse turned to Ben and placed a hand on his shoulder. "She is suffering form a mild case of hypothermia. Nothing to worry much about. We will keep her here for a little while to watch her progress. She should be as right as rain in a few days."

The nurse bathed Rose's forehead with a damp cloth. "Jack..." Rose kept repeating over and over. "I will never let go, I promise." Again Rose fell into a deep sleep, her dreams filled with visions of Jack and the life they had dreamed of.

Rose's eyes blinked open again the next morning. She sat up unsteadily and looked around the barren room. As the only patient, she had the entire room to herself. While trying to get up off the bed, her head began to spin. Softly Rose placed her hand on her forehead and closed her eyes, trying to remember how and why she had come here. The last thing she could remember was being lifted into the lifeboat in the middle
of the North Atlantic. Making her way over to the window, she peered out and noticed many queer looking trees and animals. Where was she? Everything seemed unusual and wrong. Trying to make sense of where she was, all she could recollect was Jack and Titanic.

Everything was so strange. It seemed like only a few hours ago Rose was on the bow of Titanic flying with the wind. Rose stumbled back onto her bed. Where was that man from before? Who was he? Just as Rose was asking herself these questions, Ben walked through the door at the end of the room. He smiled and came and sat beside Rose. She smiled back, trying to be polite, but inside her heart was breaking.

"Are you feeling any better this morning?" he asked casually.

"Who are you?" Rose asked slowly, "and where is everyone else?"

Ben peered at her with a pained expression. "I'm Ben. Remember, I met you on the bush track. You fainted and I brought you here. Who do you mean by everyone else? Are you ok?" Ben placed a hand on Rose's forehead to check her temperature. She seemed ok, but she was acting very strange.

"Bush track? Everything is so muddled." Rose shook her head and tried to remember something, anything about him. "I can't remember..."

Ben was confused. What was wrong with her? "Tell me something you remember, anything at all."

"Jack... I remember Jack..." Rose began, tears coming to her eyes.

"That's good. Now who is Jack?" Ben tried to prompt Rose.

"He was the most amazing person I have ever met. He saved me, in every way a person can be saved. He changed my life, and I loved him so much.." Tear started to run swiftly down Rose's cheek. Ben stretched over to Rose and wiped the tears away.

"Where do you remember being last?" Ben could see the pain in her eyes, he knew how much this must be hurting her, but to work out what was wrong with her, she had to tell him.

Rose took a deep breath and closed her eyes momentarily. "I remember...being with him, on the door. It was so cold. I couldn't stand the cold. He helped me go on. I wouldn't have survived without him. I was ready to let go, but he made me promise." Tears now were flowing steadily down Rose's face and were dropping down onto the sheets. "I promised him that I would go on. We laid there together, waiting for the boats. Slowly it got quiet. So quiet. The cold became unbearable, but I had promised. The sky was so beautiful... come Josephine in my flying machine, going up she goes up she goes...." Rose sang painfully, memories flooding back.

"You can stop for now if you want." Ben whispered to Rose. "You don't have to go on."

"No...I will go on...for Jack." Rose paused and regained her train of thought. "I remember looking up at those stars, they shone so bright. Then I saw a shooting star. It was beautiful. Jack once told me that a shooting star meant it was a soul going to heaven. I guess he was right. "By now Rose was clutching Ben's hand tightly. "Then I could barely make out a noise in the distance. I turned and the boats had come. He said they would come back. I looked down at him. He seemed so quiet, I tried and tried to wake him. I told him the boats were coming, but he wouldn't wake up. He just wouldn't. I was angry, I had promised him, but he hadn't promised me. But I couldn't hate Jack. I lowered him into the water, and I let him go. I miss him so much..." Rose sobbed into Ben's shoulder. "The last thing I remember is being lifted into the boats. And then I was here. The boats did come back, just like he said."

Rose then erupted with tears and wouldn't stop for over an hour. Ben just sat there with Rose in his arms, and he began to cry for her, and her pain.
