Rose and Brandon stood hand in hand at the train
station waiting for Allan and Eliza to arrive. Brandon and Allan thought it
best if while they were over in Europe fighting the "Kaiser" the two
girls should stay together. Since Rose's career seemed to be in full swing,
it made sense for Eliza to come to Hollywood. Ever since Rose had become engaged,
she had positively beamed. She almost felt guilty. Here the nation was at war
and she had her head in the clouds. They had planned on having the wedding when
Brandon came home, neither mentioning the fact Brandon might not come back.
"I can't wait to tell Allan," Rose
said grinning madly.
"Maybe you should wait for me to ask him
for your hand in marriage," Brandon said, returning her grin.
"Look! Look! There they are," Rose
said excitedly as she started to run towards Allan.
Rose had not seen her adopted brother in almost
four years.
At first Rose was startled at how Allan had changed.
His blond hair now had streaks of gray running through it. There were tiny lines
around his eyes and mouth that Rose could not recall him having. But when their
eyes met, she saw the same compassionate emerald green eyes that had befriended
her so long ago. As usual, he was wearing a suit, even though the temperature
was well over eighty-five degrees. 'Oh Allan, what would happen if you ever
looked less than dignified,' she thought, rolling her eyes. Eliza had blossomed.
She looked absolutely stunning. Her long hair had been cut into a chic new style
of the day. It was chin length with bangs. There was something different about
her. Her face was fuller. Then it hit her.
"You're pregnant!" Rose and Brandon
exclaimed at the same time.
"And you are engaged," Allan replied,
grinning from ear to ear.
"How do you know? I was going to tell you
my good news when you got off the train," Rose asked shocked.
"Your left hand, dear sister, and the fact
you look like you are about to burst with happiness," Allan explained,
winking at her.
They hugged and congratulated each other on their
good fortunes. It seemed like they had only been apart a day, not four years.
'Too bad the reason for the occasion wasn't a
pleasant one,' Rose thought solemnly.
"While the boys are away, we can plan a
wedding," Eliza said
"And a baby," Rose replied.
The happy foursome walked out of the train station,
laughing and joking just like old times.

'It's the last time the four of them will ever
be together,' Jack thought, profoundly sad.
"There isn't a goddamn thing I can do about
it," he said out loud to no one in particular.
'She will hate me forever for not warning her,
for letting her get hurt again,' Jack thought, wiping a tear from his face.
"No she won't, Jackie," Cora said.
Startled, Jack looked at the little girl. "Rosie
loves you," Cora continued on, "Just cause you're angry at someone,
doesn't mean you stop loving them."
Jack's eyes grew wide with astonishment looking
down at the little girl.
"That's what my Daddy always says. Just
because I am mad at you, Cora, doesn't mean I ever stop loving you," Cora
finished, grinning up at Jack a brown curl falling on her forehead.
That was the most comforting thing anyone had
said to Jack in two months. "Thank you, Cora," he whispered, bending
down to hug small child.
"Can you dance with me tonight, Jackie?"
Cora said, pulling away from his tight embrace.
"Sure, sure I can," Jack said, smiling
at her.
Jack took Cora's hand as he started to walk toward
the Titanic he thought 'Molly'.
