Rose's Angel: Chapter 37

Rated PG-13
© 1999 Holly @ Roseslay@aol.com
based on some characters
and situations originated by James Cameron Allan's body arrived on New Year's Eve. The funeral was planned for January 2. Eliza had become catatonic. It was as if she was walking around in a dream that she couldn't wake from.

Molly had been wonderful. She had been a great source of strength to Eliza, handling the funeral arrangements, and quietly taking down all the Christmas decorations.

"C'mon Rose, darling, its time to go," Molly said gently. Rose looked up at Molly nodding her head.

Rose hadn't been to church since that Sunday on the Titanic. 'It had brought back too many memories,' she thought, following Eliza down the aisle and clutching Molly's arm like it was her only lifeline. 'This can't be happening,' kept going through her mind.

Lost in her own thoughts and memories of Allan, she barely heard a word the Priest said until he introduced Allan's brother-in-law, Brandon, to read the eulogy. 'Brandon!' her mind screamed. Rose looked questioningly at Molly who looked just as shocked as Rose.

Brandon was dressed in his marine uniform. His hair was a bit longer than what it was he left. 'He looks so tired and haggard,' Rose thought.

Brandon stepped up to the pulpit and cleared his throat. When he was sure he was under control he began:

"Allan was more than a brother-in-law to me, he was my best friend, the older brother I never had. He was my sister's husband. If I had handpicked who Eliza should marry, I couldn't have done better than Allan. He loved you so much, Eliza. He spoke of you all the time. His last breath was your name. His final thoughts were of you and the child you are carrying. Always remember that. . . " Brandon's voice began to break. Clearing his throat helped him gain composure and he continued on.

"I could stand up here and say a lot of things about Allan. I could mention his integrity; his need to help others who were less fortunate; all of his political achievements. But, Allan was more than that. He was a living, breathing human being that was so full of life. Allan taught me the true meaning of life. He showed me what a humanitarian really is. He showed me that sometimes love of life involves self-sacrifice. Allan died so thousands wouldn't. He gave his life willingly so others would live. On my way here I noticed a sign that read 'There is no greater gift a man can give than his life so others shall live.' I think that describes the type of person Allan was."

Brandon quietly stepped down and sat next to Rose, taking her hand in his.

Rose's mind was reeling with what Brandon had just said. 'There is no greater gift a man can give than his life so others shall live,' kept running through her mind.

"Oh Jack, we need to talk," Rose whispered.
