Rose Down Under: Chapter 10

Rated G
© 1999 Amanda @ titanicsrose@goplay.com
based on some characters and situations originated by James Cameron

Rose progressed steadily down a narrow bush track. She was unsure about where she was heading, but didn't care as she enjoyed her peaceful surroundings. The only noise audible was the chatter of the same lorikeets from the morning. They seemed to be following her, watching Rose like two guardian angels. Now and then they would swoop towards Rose's head and she would duck suddenly to avoid being hit. The birds were having the time of their lives and Rose began to feel their carefree spirits touching her lost heart.

The track would now and then veer one way or another, and soon Rose had lost all sense of direction. She had been walking for about a half an hour when she came across a beautiful waterfall. The sun's rays reflected off the calm pools as Rose advanced towards the tranquil waters. She awkwardly made a path through the ferns and bushes down to the edge of the pool. Above her to the right, a roaring wave of water came splashing down.

Looking into the peaceful water, Rose could see her perfect reflection. Her empty eyes peered back sorrowfully at her. When once they were filled with life, and happiness, and FIRE, now they were just shrunken and alone. Rose realized how detached she was from the outside world. "Jack," she whispered to the wind. Tears started to flow steadily down her cheeks. Soon her eyes
became like two gushing waterfalls, mirroring the power of the one above her. Rose was letting all her feelings so. She kneeled by the pool for a long time, just sobbing and moaning. Out here, in isolation from the classes of people and great expectations, she felt closer to Jack. She knew he was all around her, watching her every move.

As she kneeled there, a song she had never heard before began playing its mournful tune in her head.

"Spend all your time waiting, for that second chance,

For a break that would make it ok.

There's always some reason, to feel not good enough.

And it's hard at the end of the day.

I need some distraction, oh a pitiful release

Memories seep from my veins.

They may be empty, oh well weightless and maybe

Find some peace tonight.

In the arms of the Angel, far away from here

From this star cooled cotillion, and the endlessness that your fear.

You were born from the wreckage, from your silent reverie.

You're in the arms of the angel, may you find some comfort here.

So tired of the straight life, where everywhere you turn.

There's vultures and thieves at your back.

The storm keeps on twisting, keep on building the lights,

That you make up for all that you lack.

It don't make no difference, escape this one last time.

It's easier to believe.

And this sweet madness, oh this glorious sadness,

That brings me to my knees."

To Rose, that song somehow seemed to resemble her old life. Jack was her angel and he took her away form the vultures and torment in the life that she knew. Again she collapsed into a sobbing fit and rocked herself back and forward, trying to get rid of the frightening memories from that fateful night.

One of the lorikeets flew down towards Rose and landed near her feet. Rose picked out a piece of roll she had brought with her from her pocket, and offered the scraps to the young bird. Greedily the lorikeet picked at her hand and gulped them down hungrily. As quickly as it came down, the bird was up and aloft high in the trees. Suddenly, her mind seemed clear and peaceful. Cheerful memories of Jack and Titanic flooded Rose's mind. Dancing, singing, and being merry. Then after what seemed a lifetime to Rose, her tears ran dry.
