People: First Class: Sir Cosmo Edmund Duff-Gordon

Sir Cosmo Edmund Duff-Gordon, son of Cosmo Lewis Duff-Gordon, was born on July 22, 1862. He was
married to Lucy Wallace in the year 1900. In 1908 Sir Cosmo represented Great Britian in the
1908 Olympics as a fencer.
Sir Cosmo was 49 when he boarded the Titanic with his wife. They held ticket number 11755 and
for reasons still unknown, signed in as "Mr. and Mrs. Morgan" which later caused numerous
problems when the passenger list was released after the sinking (J.M. Morgan was the owner of the
IMM whom owned the White Star Line and was to travel on the Titanic. He ended up cancelling his
trip however at the last minute). Sir Cosmo occupied room A-16 and his wife A-20.
At 1:10 A.M. Sir Cosmo and his wife asked First Officer Murdoch if they could board Lifeboat 1
together. Murdoch replied that he would be glad if they would and they did. Lifeboat 1 only
carried 12 passengers - 7 of which were crew members.
After they were lowered it was debated amoung the passengers of the boat if they should wait
around for survivors. Sir Cosmo expressed his concern about being swamped and the passengers
eventually gave in after a breif arguement and rowed away. Many of the crew members expressed
their sorrow over the boat sinking because they had not only lost their belongings but their
jobs as well and most likely would not receive pay for the full trip like they were expecting.
Sir Cosmo gave the passengers some money to help ease the pain. His intent behind his gift was
later questioned as perhaps a bribe not to go back and pick up survivors.
Sir Cosmo and Lady Duff Gordon were rescued by the Carpathia and later returned to London.
Once they returned to Great Britian Sir Cosmo had to defend himself at the British Inquiry against
the accusation that he bribed the crew not to return to pick up survivors. Sir Cosmo died on
April 20, 1931.
